Welcome Friends!

Boy, do we have the best lemonade recipe you will ever taste.  We will show you step-by-step how kids can make our delicious homemade Lavender Lemonade.  It’s taste amazing plus it’s a super fun way to introduce your little chef to the art of Herbal Infusion.Lavender Lemonade_SSC

Every knows that a perfect pitcher of lemonade is the best way to cool off on a hot summer’s day.  But did you know that you can give your lemonade a delicious twist by infusing herbs? Lavender is a well known flower, but it’s also an edible herb.  It adds an amazing aroma and flavor to drinks such as lemonade and tea as well as treats and baked goods.

We first discovered Lavender Lemonade when my little chef and his friends set up their very first lemonade stand.  Every since then, it’s been a family favorite.  It’s easy to make and we will show you how:

Step 1: Make a Simple Syrup with Lavender

So what’s a simple syrup?  Well, it’s simply a solution of sugar and water.  You take 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar and heat in a saucepan for 3-5 minutes until it’s dissolved. The liquid should be clear when it’s done.

Simple syrups are great for making drinks because you don’t have to worry about sugar crystals falling to bottom.  Don’t you hate it when your drinks are super sweet on the bottom and a not that sweet on top?  Well, you don’t have that problem when you use a simple syrup. Plus, simple syrups are the KEY to making herbal infused drinks.

Lavender Lemonade_simple syrupJust add 2 tablespoons of culinary lavender to the simple syrup solution, cover the saucepan and let the lavender steep.  This will help add the flavor and aroma.

So now you’re thinking… where exactly do I get culinary lavender?  Well, you can go to your local lavender farm like we did… which makes for a fun afternoon day trip.

Step 2: Cut and Juice Lemons

While the lavender is steeping, this is perfect time to cut and juice the lemons. Always encourage your little chef to practice safe cutting skills when using a knife… Don’t forget your claw!

For this recipe, we used 1 cup of lemon juice which took about 6-8 lemons.

Step 3: Drain the Lavender

Next, pour the simple syrup into a pitcher while draining the lavender.  We tried different ways to drain the lavender and the way that worked best was using a colander or strainer.  But we also tried using a coffee filter which works well as long as you pour very slowly in the middle of the filter.  Just be very careful because the syrup may still be a bit hot. Parents may want to help on this part.

Step 4: Mix and Serve

Now add the 1 cup of lemon juice and 3 more cups of water to the pitcher.  Feel free to add more sweetness to the mixture for your personal taste.  The warmth of the simple syrup will help dissolve any additional sugar or honey you may add.

That’s it.. Just 4 simple steps and now your little ones can make their own signature lemonade.  You can also try infusing other herbs in your lemonade such as basil or mint.  Follow the same steps just use your favorite herb instead of the lavender.

Give a try and tell us how it tastes…Happy Cooking!!!
