If you’re anything like me, I used my waffle iron like once quarter. Then I came across a list of waffle iron recipes on Pinterest and now we are using it all the time. One of the ideas was a Waffle Iron Grilled Cheese which is one of my little chef’s favorites so we had to give it a try. Plus, waffle irons recipes are great for little chefs because it cooks both side at the same time so there’s no flipping required. BAM…Kid Cooking Hack!
Cover the waffle iron with cooking spray. Then place buttered sides of the bread on the outside of the sandwich with the cheese in the middle. The waffle iron was on medium heat. We used a simple Oster Waffle Iron that worked perfectly.
But please, please, please be sure to only touch the cool parts of the waffle iron because you could burn yourself… like my little chef did. We quickly ran it under water and gave him an ice pack. The next time we try this recipe, we may try turning on the heat after we placed the bread and cheese on the waffle iron.
SOUS CHEF MOMMY TIP:Waffle irons are great for little chefs because there is minimal heat interaction needed. It’s important to remind your little chef to touch on the cool parts or to use a pot holder.
Cook for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Cheese may ooze on the sides but clean up was easy since we use the non-stick spray. Use a spatula or thongs to remove the sandwich from the waffle iron. The sandwich will have little waffle marks making it fun to eat.
My little chef was so excited that he could make grilled cheese sandwich without help from Sous Chef Mommy (well except to take care of his boo boo). He was so proud of his lunch!
- 2 slices of bread
- 1 slice of your favorite cheese
- 2 teaspoons of butter
- Spread one slice of bread with butter, only on one side
- Place the butter side of the bread on the outside of the sandwich with cheese in the middle.
- Place the sandwich in the middle of the waffle iron.
- With the waffle iron on medium heat, close the top of the waffle iron and let cook for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy and the cheese has melted.
